Critical Reflection (2nd draft)
Critical Reflection
Being in ES1102 for about 10 weeks, I have learned many things from Mr.
Brad. This is the most interesting English class I have attended, mainly
because the way the lessons have been conducted, the American English and there
is no comprehension exercises for the entire course.
Our
class was divided into five different blogging groups. Fortunately, I have
three nice ladies with me and they really helped me a lot. I can still remember
that our first block assignment was an introduction of ourselves and the English
learning journey. Later in the tutorial class, Brad picked up some and started
analyze them by asking us that what are the errors in those passages. That part
really gave me a very deep impression, because during my high school and junior
college time, my teachers never like Brad, who emphasizes the English grammar
so much and so detailed. Even there is really a minor error, he would still
point out.
In
the following weeks, once we posted the assignments to the blog, we would have
a peer evaluation session, which basically commented on the use of language
including the grammatical errors, the content and the structure of the essay.
With the help of the comments, we could refine our essay to make it better.
Through the process of reviewing others’ posts, I have a better understanding
of the use of language and some common grammatical
errors.
Next,
through the process of developing the globalization essay, I realize that the
university essay style has much differences compare to the General Paper essay.
Although, the type of the essay is similar, most are argumentative essay, the
essay in the university requires more professional terms, such as the APA
style, which I never heard before. Moreover, the way to think a problem has to
be more critical.
Before
we entered the essay, we did summary and reader's response. This two
assignments are useful in such a way that they require a strong analytic
skill. In ‘The Double Edge of Globalization’, Chanda's main points
are not clear. So, we had to analyze his article and summarize his main points.
For the readers' response, we needed to response base on one of Chanda's point.
These exercises seem not so relevant to the essay writing, but they help train
our thought process, which acts as a tool to help us develop our essay, make
the essay better.
`
In
conclusion, ES1101 is a useful and interesting module. It can really strengthen
my English, not only the writing skills but also the way to analyze the
problems. This is essential in the university as we have to write many reports
during the entire 4 years courses. After this module, I believe that if I apply
all the knowledge that I have learned to my other subject’s reports, those
reports will be up to a new level.
