Reader’s Response (Final draft)
In the article “The Double Edge of Globalization”,
Chanda (2007) mentioned that people around the world are able to get the
information related to the environmental issues immediately with “the
instantaneous transmission of news and image”. In my opinion, there is no
denying that the Internet can help to raise people's awareness of the negative
impacts, which global warming brings to us, but, I cannot see any apparent
evidences, which show that people are taking action to ameliorate the
environment.
One of the biggest environmental issues is the use of
plastics. Tons of plastics are produced and used every day. Even though the
frequency of natural disasters increased and the global warming has become more
severe in the past few years, people’s behavior remains unchanged. For example,
when people go shopping, they still prefer using the plastic bags to pack their
purchased items even after governments have already emphasized this many times
and encouraged customers to use the shopping bags. However, people were ignorant,
only a small percentages of people paid attention to this issue. As we all
know, plastics are non-biodegradable, we either recycle them for the purpose of
reuse or burn them off to reduce the amount of plastics. Burning
plastics produces many toxic and harmful gases, which significantly contributed
to the air pollution.
Environmental degradation and global warming
are the problems we are facing today, and they cannot be ameliorated just by
our governments. Everyone should play a role to improve our environmental
condition and we must be aware that the problems are detrimental.
